In the world of digital marketing, things are always changing. There’s always new features to test out, algorithms to keep up with, and the rules about “what works” seem to change every day. Choosing a Facebook ad image that will convert is one of those things. It can be difficult to know which of the best practices are really best, and the confusion can lead to paralysis.

According to Consumer Acquisition, images are the most important part of your Facebook ads, in face, they’re responsible for 75%-90% of your ad’s performance. This can be intimidating for even seasoned ad pros. But, rather than feeling overwhelmed or just dropping the idea of Facebook ads altogether, let’s go over some insider tips to choosing an image that will help you.

Facebook Ad Image Size

Facebook recommends that your image be at least 1200 pixels wide, and no smaller than 600. You definitely don’t want a grainey or low-resolution photo since you’re trying to grab people’s attention and get them to stop scrolling. They also recommend cropping your image so it’s landscape (long side on top and bottom). If you’re using square images like the ones we create at Soiree Stock, you can crop the part of the image you like best.

Think About Color

You’re investing money on your Facebook ad, so you want to make sure people notice it. Using an image that is too similar to Facebook’s colors could cause it to blend in. Similarly, something that’s too muted or mostly white isn’t going to be your best bet. Use an image that has bright colors (even better if they’re your brand colors) like bright pink, orange, red, or turquoise. If it makes sense to do so, you can also add a fun filter or color overlay to your photo to make it stand out.

A Canvas for Text

When choosing your Facebook ad image, choose something that has a natural space to overlay some text. Facebook doesn’t allow much text, however, you can try a few carefully selected words like “free” or “you” (people love these words). When planning your ad design, make sure there’s a logical place to add text that isn’t going to cover up a vital part of your image, then use Facebook’s Text Overlay Tool to make sure you don’t have too much text on your image.

Consider Carousel Ads

When you set up your Facebook Ad, you’ll get to choose from a number of different ad options. Consider setting up a carousel ad (the kind with multiple images that you can arrow through like a slideshow). According to some marketing experts, these ads perform better, and they also give you a chance to feature multiple images. Choose contrasting colors, or play with the sequence element of the ad to get people to stop and take notice!

Keep Testing and Tweaking

Hitting “publish” on your Facebook ad doesn’t have to be the final step… in fact, it shouldn’t be. Watch your ad, and if it isn’t performing as well as you’d like, tweak the copy, the image, or the call to action. Try the same image with two different messages, or the same message with two different images. You’ll learn a lot about what works and what doesn’t by doing this and your ads will get stronger in the process.
